What is Salsabil?
One of the characteristics the Ahlul-Bayt (AS) are remembered by is their generosity. Of the various stories we have heard in this regard, the following narration relates to the occasion on which the above verse was revealed:
And they feed, for the love of Allah, the indigent, the orphan, and the captive (Saying), “We feed you for the sake of Allah alone: no reward do we desire from you, nor thanks.” (The Holy Quran 76:8-9)
It is narrated that when the Prophet’s grandsons, Hasan and Husain, got severely ill, it was suggested to Imam Ali that he make a vow for their recovery. To this end, Imam Ali, Hadhrat Fatimah, and their housemaid, Fizzah, made a vow to fast for three days. Each time they prepared to break their fast in the evening, a needy individual showed up at their home asking for food; and every time, the family gave away all their food including the food of the children. On the fourth day, the Prophet finds the family in a state of grave hunger. The children Hasan and Husain are shaking while Hadhrat Fatimah is praying despite her weak physique. At this moment, Gabriel descends upon the Prophet congratulating him on behalf of Allah for having such a family; after which Gabriel recites the above verse.
As Muslim student activists, we want to uphold the tradition of Ahlul-Bayt (AS) by promoting charity and almsgiving. ABSA Network encourages student organizations to hold community service projects, entitled as Seek Thy Way (Salsabil), with more freedom and responsibility while all ABSA Network’s teams may help in all steps of the project. With the birthday of Hadhrat Faṭimah (SA) and Imam Ali (AS) being about 21 days apart, we will ground some community service projects in the above-mentioned narration as both holy figures took part in this act of charity. Furthermore, we have chosen to name our project Salsabil, as it is narrated to be a spring in Heaven of which Imam Ali (AS) is in charge of. Additionally, this spring quenches the thirst of those who gave their wealth to the poor and the name of this spring translates to “find your way”.Our hope is that by partaking in these projects, we spread the light of Ahlul-Bayt (AS) and establish almsgiving as an inspiration for our audience to seek their way to Allah, insha’Allah.
ABSA Network holds the Salsabil event in the time between birthday of Hadhrat Faṭimah (SA) (Feb 26th) and Imam Ali (AS) (May 20th), which is 21 days (excluding the birthdays). In this regard, we would like to suggest some ideas of community service projects while we highly encourage organizations to come up with their own idea individually. The important factor in choosing such service is needs of the community.
- Feeding hungers: One of the last year ABSA Network’s projects, where the package is available online (browse the project files), was feeding the hunger project. The event includes interviewing people about their experiences and feelings about helping needy people. The interviewees would then be asked to participate in a charity event on a specific date. In the charity event, sandwiches would be prepared in food packs and distributed among the needy people, on the birth anniversary of Imam Ali (AS).
- Josef project: Going to prisons and talk to prisoners, and trying to solve their issues.
